Liverpool FC will face competition for Uruguayan

Liverpool are in talks with the agents of Manuel Ugarte, Sporting CP’s defensive midfielder, over a possible move this summer. Liverpool has had a below-par season, sitting in fifth place and hoping for Manchester United or Newcastle United to slip up to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League. Jurgen Klopp has stated that Liverpool remains an attractive proposition for players, despite their struggles this season.

Liverpool’s midfield has been a particular concern, with only Fabinho and the injured Stefan Bajcetic as the club’s natural defensive midfielders. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been playing in an inverted full-back role alongside Fabinho to help the Brazilian regain his form. The interest in Ugarte suggests that he is seen as a potential solution to this issue. Ugarte has been one of Europe’s most impressive young midfielders this season, featuring in 45 games in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon.

Liverpool is reportedly set to present a deal to Sporting CP this week, but they face competition from Aston Villa and Chelsea, who are also keeping tabs on the Uruguayan midfielder.

Klopp is hoping that a solid finish to the current campaign and the prospect of Champions League football will persuade Ugarte to join Liverpool. If Liverpool can secure the signing of Ugarte, it could provide a much-needed boost to their midfield ahead of next season.
